iPhone Storage

There are so many arguments about the iPhone storage capability and the ability to transfere files from other devices to the iPhone due to the lack of SD card like almost all Android devices.

In this page, I will show you how easy it is to transfer files from your Mac or PC to and from your iPhone without the need of an SD card.

The SD Card method:

This is the old school method that is used by almost all Android devices which Apple doesn't include on its iOS devices. This method of course requires an SD card, and requires that your computer can actually read the SD card size you have. If not, you will have to purchase a USB to SD card reader.

First, you need to transfer the file you want from your computer to your SD card. Although this process sound easy, it could be a hassle for some people. First, you need to insert the SD card in the USB reader, and see if it will mount on your desktop. If it does, then you are good, and you just need to drag and drop the files you want from your computer to the SD card. If the computer doesn't read the SD card. Then you will need to format it first.

Once the files are copied from your computer to your SD card which would depend on the size of the files, you can then remove the SD card from the computer and insert it into your your Android device.

As you can see the advantage of this method is that you can increase your iPhone storage by having the files right on the SD card saved for anytime to use in stead of using your internal iPhone storage. The process though is not very convenient, and you have to carry the SD card in a little case to keep them. Do we need an SD card for the iPhone? probably it is a good feature to have, but can we live without it? definitely yes.

Transferring files to your iPhone the Modern Way:

Thanks to iCloud and to many other cloud services by other companies like Google Drive, DropBox, and many others. The internet makes streaming videos and transferring and storing files seamless on the iPhone. If you want to watch a movie, you can simply stream it to your iDevice from iTunes. You can either buy it or rent it. This is straight forward, but it cost money.

Also, some Cable companies provide an App that allows you to access many Cable channels on line. Xfinity TV is one app that once you log in, you will be able to access your video or channels. Airvideo and Streamtome are good video streaming apps that stream video from your home computer to any iOS without the need to transfer any files.

There are many other applications that allow you to stream documents, PDF files and almost any file you have from your computer. Simply save your files to a cloud service like DropBox, and you instantly can access those files from anywhere in the worlds from your iPhone.

Transfer files using iTunes:

This method requires you to be connected to iTunes, and transfer the file wirelessly from your computer. If you have wireless sync enabled on your iTunes for your iPhone, then you can do this wirelessly.

Find an application that will read your specific file from the App Store. Install it on your iPhone, and then in iTunes select that app and drag and drop the files to that App. You will immediately transfer the files to your iPhone, and be able to access them from that App.

VLC and Azul are good iPhone movie players that play almost any kind of video format. There are hundreds of other Apps in the app store that play any type of file format you think of. Of course, this method use some of your iPhone storage space but the files are with you all the time similar to the SD method.

What d you think, should Apple add an SD card to the iPhone and other iOS devices? how about copy writes, and piracy? Write your thoughts in the comments below.
