iPhone Ringtones
iPhone ringtones are short pieces of tones of 30 seconds
maximum
that replace your iPhone's built in rings. They could be as simple as
monophonic rings or as complicated as an actual clip of a song. With
custom
ringtones
you can distinguish between different callers by
assigning them different ringtones.
In your iPhone you can
select a default ring tone for the system, and you can also set a
ringtone
for any of your contacts.
Therefore, when this
contact calls you, not only his phone number and picture will display
on your screen, but also the
ringtone
that you selected for that
contact will be heard.
So, you would know who is calling and you can decide
to pick up or not, just from the ringtone sound.
To set your default ringtone, go to Settinigs and then sounds. You can set your ringtone volume and also change the default ringtone. (see picture on left)
To set the
ringtone
for each individual contact,
open the Contacts app, and tap the contact you want to set the ringtone
for. You will see a ringtone button, that gives you access to all your
ringtones, select the one you want.

The iPhone comes with some built in ringtones, but they
are nothing compared to the ability to make
your own ringtones from your favorite iTunes library.
Imagine the ability of converting any song you have in
iTunes
to
ringtone
. It is possible but unfortunately, without purchasing the
song, it is not that simple.
Due to copyrights, Apple is strict
about allowing you to make
iPhone ringtones
easily from any song you
have in your iTunes library. Apple doesn't know where those songs came
from. Therefore, they want you to buy them first from the iTunes store.
Apple charges $0.99 for the song and another $0.99 to convert it to
ringtone.
Purchase iPhone ringtones from iTunes:
This
is the official method that is supported by Apple. It only works with
purchased songs from the
iTunes
store.
It will not work with songs you
purchased from another online store, or songs ripped from a purchased
CD or downloaded from the internet.
Therefor, it costs $1.98 to
have a ringtone using the Apple simplest method, which is right click
on the purchased song, and select create ringtone.
If the song is not
purchased from
iTunes
store, you will get a message from iTunes telling
you that. This $1.98 price is still better than other companies who
charge $2.99 for a ringtone.

Other options for ringtones:
There is a work around to convert non purchased songs to
ring tone. click
here to see how you can make free iPhone ringtones using iTunes
from any song you have in your iTunes music library. Or simply use GarageBand.
There are several other methods of creating ringtones
that could be used on your iPhone. Another method is to make
ringtones for iPhone using your Mac or PC. You will do all the work
on the
desktop computer, and finally export the final
ringtone
to
iTunes and sync with your iPhone.
On the other side, you can make
ringtones
on the iPhone
itself using apps from the App Store.
Simply use an application like Ringtone Recorder Unlimited Free that use the iPhone’s microphone to capture any sound as a ringtone,
or use an app like 1001 Ringtone which has ready created ringtones. Click here to learn how to make
your own ringtone with apps from the AppStore.
The other way of creating ringtones is done on the iPhone itself
and requires a jailbreak, but it is a much easier method. You create
iPhone ringtone by installing third party applications
from Cydia.
The advantage of using the jailbreak method is that you
have access to the file system, which means your finished ringtone will
be installed on your iPhone without the need to sync with iTunes.
Another simple method of creating your own
iPhone ringtones
is to make
ringtone using the web.
There are several websites that allow you to create ringtones for
iPhone. Those websites vary in look & feel, and you have to
register with them first to use their service.
If you search
the internet for
free ringtones, you will find tons of those websites.
Just be cautious with some websites as they might charge a monthly fee
and make sure they have free service to try first at least.
